A disruptive innovation is a technology whose application significantly affects the way a market functions. It can unexpectedly displace an established technology, is generally cheaper, simpler, smaller, and/or more convenient to use. It can bring complex and expensive health care products and services to greater levels of affordability and accessibility. Some examples of disruptive innovations include retail clinics, telemedicine, medical tourism, personalized medicine, and point-of-care payments.
Disruptive innovators are using the same playbook that leverages digital ubiquity, influence marketing, emerging technologies and a wide range of other best practices to completely change the health care landscape. This was one of the main themes at this year’s Medicine X 2017 Conference.
