You’re Invited! We hope you’ll join us for our next Empowered #patientchat on Friday, January 25th as we discuss second opinions. A second opinion is an opinion of a doctor other than the patient’s current doctor. The second doctor reviews the patient’s medical records and gives an opinion about the patient’s health problem and how it should be treated.
If you’ve been diagnosed with a serious or rare medical condition, seeking a second opinion is crucial to prevent misdiagnosis or unnecessary procedures or surgeries. A study done by Mayo Clinic showed that as many as 88% of patients who get a second opinion go home with a new or refined diagnosis. That shows that only 12% of patients receive confirmation that their original diagnosis was complete and correct.
Still, a lot of patients never get second opinions. In this Empowered #patientchat, we want to explore why that is and what can or should be done.
Empowered Patient Chats (#patientchat) are held every other Friday at 10:00 am Pacific / 1:00 pm Eastern and during the chat patients and advocates come to learn from each other and discuss topics of interest to empowered patients.
