Bile Duct Cancer

Bile duct cancer, also called cholangiocarcinoma, is a rare disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the bile duct. The bile ducts are a series of thin tubes that go from the liver to the small intestine. Their main job is to allow a fluid called bile to go from the liver and gallbladder into the small intestine, where it helps digest the fats in food.

There are two types of bile duct cancer:

  • Intrahepatic bile duct cancer – forms in the bile ducts inside the liver
  • Extrahepatic bile duct cancer – forms in the bile ducts outside the liver
