What Are the Treatments for Renal Medullary Carcinoma??

Treatment decisions are based on factors such as disease stage, tumor size, whether RMC has spread to other areas of the body, the individual’s age, overall health, and other considerations. Treatment options include:

  • Chemotherapy: Drug treatment to shrink tumors, enhance radiation effects, or prevent recurrence, often used as a first-line treatment.
  • Surgery:
    • Partial Nephrectomy: Removes only the tumor while preserving kidney function.
    • Simple Nephrectomy: Removes the entire kidney.
    • Radical Nephrectomy: Removes the kidney, the adrenal gland, surrounding tissue, and usually nearby lymph nodes.
  • Radiation Therapy: Uses high doses of radiation to destroy or damage cancer cells.
  • Clinical Trials:  Investigate new drugs that block the removal of unwanted proteins from cancer cells, target specific pathways, or harness the body’s immune system to recognize and kill RMC cells.
