Ependymal Tumors

Ependymal tumors are a type of brain and spinal cord tumor. They start in the ependymal cells, which are special cells that line the spaces in the brain and the spinal cord where cerebrospinal fluid (the fluid around your brain and spine) flows.

These tumors can happen in both children and adults, but they are more common in kids. Some ependymal tumors grow slowly, and others can grow quickly and spread.

Where Ependymal Tumors Are Found:

  • In the brain, often near the ventricles (spaces filled with fluid)
  • In the spinal cord, along the center where fluid moves

Signs of an Ependymal Tumor Can Include:

  • Headaches that don’t go away
  • Feeling sick to your stomach or throwing up
  • Trouble with balance or walking
  • Back pain or weakness in the arms or legs
  • Feeling very tired
  • Problems with vision

How Do Doctors Find an Ependymal Tumor?

Doctors use MRI or CT scans to look inside the brain and spine. A biopsy may also be done to find out exactly what kind of tumor it is.

How Is It Treated?

Treatment depends on the size, location, and type of the tumor. It may include:

  • Surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible
  • Radiation therapy to help stop the tumor from growing
  • Chemotherapy (strong medicine) sometimes used, especially in young children

Doctors and scientists are working to find better ways to treat ependymal tumors, especially for kids. The sooner these tumors are found, the better the chances of successful treatment.
