Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a fast-growing type of cancer:
- Acute means it develops quickly.
- Myeloid refers to the type of cells it affects. Myeloid cells are a type of white blood cell that help your body fight infections and stay healthy. (Sometimes the word myelogenous is used instead of myeloid.)
- Leukemia is cancer of the blood or bone marrow.
