Digestive System Cancers

The digestive system is made up of organs that help the body break down food and absorb nutrients. Cancers can develop in any part of this system, from the esophagus to the colon, and each type may cause different symptoms depending on where it starts. Understanding the main types of digestive system cancers helps patients, families, and advocates recognize risks, symptoms, and treatment options.

PEN has content for these types of digestive system cancers:

Other digestive system cancers are:

  • Anal Cancer: Anal cancer is a rare type of cancer that starts in the opening at the end of the digestive tract, called the anus.
  • Esophageal Cancer: This cancer starts in the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. It can cause trouble swallowing, weight loss, and chest pain.
  • Gallbladder Cancer (Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancer): This rare cancer starts in the small organ under the liver that stores bile. It’s hard to detect early and may cause pain, nausea, or yellowing of the skin.
  • Liver Cancer: Liver cancer often begins in the main liver cells (hepatocytes) and may be linked to hepatitis or long-term liver damage. It can cause belly pain, yellowing of the skin (jaundice), or fatigue.
  • Pancreatic Cancer: Pancreatic cancer begins in the pancreas, an organ that helps with digestion and blood sugar. It’s often hard to find early and may cause weight loss, back pain, or jaundice.
  • Small Intestine (Small Bowel) Cancer: This cancer begins in the long, narrow part of the intestine that absorbs nutrients. It may cause cramps, bleeding, or changes in digestion.
