Penile Cancer
Penile cancer is a rare cancer that starts in the skin or tissues of the penis, the male sex organ. Most penile cancers begin in the foreskin or the head (glans) of the penis. While it is uncommon in many parts of the world, it can be more common in areas where hygiene is limited or circumcision is less common.
Early symptoms may include changes in the skin of the penis, such as a lump, sore, rash, or growth, especially if it doesn’t heal. There may also be bleeding, discharge, or pain. Because these symptoms can look like other conditions (like infections), it’s important to get checked early.
Doctors may use a physical exam, biopsy, imaging tests, and blood work to diagnose and stage penile cancer. Treatment depends on how early it is found and may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or topical treatments.
Types of penile cancer include:
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma: The most common type (over 90% of cases). It starts in the flat skin cells on the surface of the penis. It may grow slowly and often starts as a flat sore or growth.
- Verrucous Carcinoma: A rare, slow-growing subtype of squamous cell cancer that looks like a large wart. It usually does not spread quickly.
- Basal Cell Carcinoma: A very rare skin cancer that grows slowly and rarely spreads. It starts in the lower layer of the skin.
- Melanoma: Starts in pigment-producing cells. This type is rare but can be aggressive.
- Sarcoma: A rare cancer that begins in connective tissues, blood vessels, or muscle in the penis.
